Description:
It derives its name from the place where it was discovered, Molina de Aragón (Spain). Its formula is the same as that of calcite (calcium carbonate) but with a different crystal shape, an orthorhombic system with acicular crystals, whereas calcite's is trigonal. Although it is quite a common mineral, its varied colouring due to impurities, and the beauty of its shapes, usually in the form of multiple crystal twinning, make it a desirable mineral for collectors.
