Description:
Bredbergite is a variety of andradite, and is very hard to find as it is extremely rare. Its main characteristic is its content of magnesium. It was discovered in the famous Swedish silver mine of Sala, where this specimen is from, and, as far as is known, it is the only deposit. The mine was closed down more than a century ago and is now a tourist attraction. The crystals of this specimen are more than 2.5 cm long. It was collected in 1864, as it says on the label shown here, and it used to belong to the Museum of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (USA).
