It has been operated over centuries and still produces emeralds of top quality. The specimens embedded in a matrix are very much sought after by collectors, but now one has to be very careful, as often they are not real, but the stones have been glued to the matrix. Thus, specimens like this one, where there are several gems embedded in a matrix of calcite, are hard to come by.
