Description:
In 1576, the Spanish governor of the Tucuman region sent an expedition out under the leadership of Hernan Mexia in search of a place the Toba people called "Field of heaven", from where, according to them, they extracted a very pure iron for their arrow heads. Thus was discovered an area which much later was identified as the place where around 5000 years ago a meteorite weighing some 840 tons, had fallen. In a vast area there are still 25 impact craters and hundreds of fragments from this meteorite. Some of these fragments have an impressive weight, such as the one called Chaco, weighing 37 tons, or Meson de Fierro, weighing around 20 tons.
