Description:
It is named after James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington. It is one of the most important zinc minerals, which in its pure state is white; however, smithsonite can appear in all sorts of colours, such as blue yellow, red, green, etc. It rarely crystallizes, but often appears in masses, sometimes quite large ones, or in stalactites, and it forms layers which sometimes show different colours which provide these specimens with great beauty. Good specimens are cut for collection gems.
