The name is derived from its axe-like crystal shapes. Found in a mine of gem-bearing gravel near Ratnapura, Sri Lanka. The crystals of these deposits inevitably show the consequences of its turbulent formation. These deposits have been well-known for thousands of years due to the vast diversity of precious stones that can be found there, though axinite is one of the rarest.
