Quartz was chosen by the geologist Friedrich Mohs to represent grade 7 in his famous scale of hardness dating back to 1825, and which is still valid nowadays. What astounds one of this specimen is that the crystals look as if they were receptacles filled with sand. It looks almost impossible that crystals could be formed in this environment.
